For about 10 minutes, Ben somberly led Harvey and Cordell through the brush. The best he could do was keep going in the general direction he ran back from and terrain associate to prevent from getting lost. For most of the journey he led his two captors slowly and silently. All the while he was trying to formulate a plan to get away and free Zoe. Through the whole trek he couldn’t think of anything concrete.

As they stepped over some fallen logs, Harvey then asked, “How much farther is it?”

“Not too much farther.” Ben said.

“Better not be.” Harvey said. “For your sake and your little lady’s sake, it better not me.”

Ben took in a deep stressful breath to stay calm and keep his head straight. As they continued on, a lingering fear started to resurface in his conscious. It would spike whenever a strange noise like the hooting of an owl or a small critter would stir up some of the dead undergrowth. The two officers kept their lights on him from behind, along with their revolvers, which provided enough light to see what was directly in front of him. However, the world seemed dark and endless beyond the light. He feared that somewhere out in the vast darkness, the Goatman was watching and waiting. Even if the two officers were armed, if it struck at the right moment, their weapons would mean nothing.

Suddenly Harvey asked, “So, this Goatman you say you saw, mind enlightening me on what the hell it is exactly?”

Cordell chuckled a little, “I thought we don’t deal in ghost stories?”

“Well, I’m bored.” Harvey said. “So, go on boy, tell me the story. Spook us.”

For a second Ben hesitated before he started talking, “It’s like he said, mostly its rumors and stories. Some say it’s a mad doctor from that lab in Beltsville that mutated himself into a monster. Some say it’s a soldier with shellshock that got part of his face blown off in the war. Others say it’s the ghost of an old man with a face like a goat that used to wander the railway tracks with an axe, come back from the dead after being hit by a train.”

Cordell laughed a little and shook his head, “Oh lord.”

Ben kept talking, “They say that if you disturb him. He’ll come for you. And he won’t stop coming for you coming until he finds you.”

Ben hesitated to continue as it brought back the memory of hearing Flyboy’s horrifying screams.

Harvey, partially anxious to hear the rest, asked, “So once he finds you, then what happens?”

Ben cleared his throat and said, “With his axe, he chops you up into pieces. After that, he takes your pieces and turns them into decoration for his home; marks his territory with your arms, your legs, and your head. Whatever’s left after that, he eats.”

Cordell, getting bored, then added, “Yeah, yeah; puts your head on a post, uses your bones as windchimes, hangs you with your own intestine, impales his favorites. Heard it all before.
